This rare print, entitled "INVINCIBLE ITEM", is a most colourful and detailed image of LW170 "I for Item" on her homeward bound leg after her 26th combat operation on August 1, 1944.
The print is one of the most imposing and impressive renditions ever produced of the trusted and dependable Handley Page Halifax. It was created by noted Canadian artist Michael McCabe. The print was donated by Michael to our cause in memory of his cousin, William D. Walsh, who was killed-in-action as a Halifax tail-gunner with No. 408 ‘Goose’ (B) Squadron. The hundreds of hours spent to ensure accuracy are very apparent the moment you see the print.
The signatures upon this print (10 to 12 signers - subject to their health) are those of actual crew members still living who flew Halifax LW170 in combat 61 years ago. They flew at least one or more of her 28 combat operations. This includes operations in support of the D-Day landings. Also included among the signatories will be the artist, Michael McCabe.
After hundreds of hours of research by Halifax 57 Rescue (Canada) directors, we were able to find these combat veterans located all over Canada. The average age of these aerial warriors is 83! All of them eagerly agreed to sign the prints of "INVINCIBLE ITEM" to help raise funds in support of locating and successfully recovering Halifax LW170 in 2006. One of the signatures of note, is that of pilot Russell Earl D.F.C. whose personal aircraft was LW170. He flew her eleven times into combat during 1944. Earl certainly has more than a passing interest in seeing his old ‘Item’ again!
Thousands of miles were traveled to acquire these signatures and many hours donated by our dedicated team to ensure the accuracy of "INVINCIBLE ITEM". As a result of this, we are able to offer you a most unique and collectable Halifax aircraft print.
The Limited-Edition prints of "INVINCIBLE ITEM", of which there are only 500 signed by the Halifax veterans, are available at a cost of $ 165. (Canadian) including shipping. With each print will be a letter of authenticity from Halifax 57 Rescue (Canada) and the information sheet listing all signatories with their combat history.
Further to this we have 250 unsigned prints of "INVINCIBLE ITEM" which will be offered as an option for our members, supporters, and the general public. These prints will be priced accordingly at $ 90. (Canadian) including shipping. The personal information sheet on the men who flew "INVINCIBLE ITEM" will be included.
Remember that all of the funds raised from the sales of "INVINCIBLE ITEM" will go towards our goal to locate and recover Halifax LW170 from the deep in 2006.
By the purchase of this most unique print we are offering to you now, you will be helping us save not only a truly historic aircraft but also directly honouring those Canadian, British, and American crews of Bomber Command who made the ultimate sacrifice in Allied Victory.
